Manchester United Pursue Free-Agent Mario Hermoso as Defensive Reinforcement

Manchester United have initiated contact with Mario Hermoso’s representatives regarding a potential transfer, according to journalist Maximo de la Cruz Ramirez. The 29-year-old defender, who left Atlético Madrid this summer after his contract expired, is available on a free transfer and is reportedly seeking a contract worth €18 million over three years, equivalent to €115,000 (£98,000) per week.

Hermoso, a Madrid native, made 174 appearances for Atlético Madrid, winning La Liga during his tenure. Known for his strong ball-playing ability, Hermoso has been highly regarded as one of Europe's top left-sided centre-backs. His availability has attracted interest from several clubs, including Tottenham, Aston Villa, and Chelsea. However, Manchester United have emerged as a serious contender, with Erik ten Hag keen to secure him as a left-footed option to complement Lisandro Martínez in defense.

The Red Devils are in need of additional central defensive cover, especially following an injury to Leny Yoro, who is expected to be sidelined for three months. Hermoso’s potential move to Old Trafford could address this gap while aligning with United’s requirement for a left-footed centre-back.

Hermoso's 2023/24 La Liga statistics reflect his solid defensive contributions:

- Appearances: 31

- Pass Accuracy: 86.1%

- Progressive Passes Per 90: 6.23

- Passes into the Final Third Per 90: 5.7

- Tackles Per 90: 1.62

- Interceptions Per 90: 1.06

- Clearances Per 90: 3.27

- Aerial Duels Won Per 90: 1.62

In addition to their pursuit of Hermoso, Manchester United are also exploring options for midfield reinforcements. They are reportedly intensifying their interest in Monaco's Youssouf Fofana, who is also being targeted by AC Milan. Fofana’s potential move could be influenced by his remaining contract length, with Monaco possibly considering a cut-price deal.
