In a recent development, Barcelona has officially announced that midfielder Oriol Romeu will join Girona on a season-long loan. The agreement will see Romeu stay with Girona until June 30, 2025.

Barcelona confirmed the deal on August 5, 2024, with a statement highlighting the terms of the loan. Romeu, who returned to Barcelona last summer after a successful stint with Girona in the 2022/23 season, initially played a significant role in Xavi Hernández’s squad. However, his impact diminished over the course of the season, partly due to a knee injury. He made a total of 37 appearances for Barcelona, 17 of which were as a starter.

The move to Girona marks Romeu's return to a club where he previously enjoyed considerable success. During his time at Barcelona, Romeu struggled to meet expectations, especially in filling the gap left by Sergio Busquets' departure. His role was eventually filled by Andreas Christensen, who played out of position to stabilize the crucial holding midfielder role.

With Aleix García moving to Bayer Leverkusen earlier this summer, Romeu's return is seen as a timely reinforcement for Girona.

Best of luck to Oriol Romeu in his new chapter with Girona!
